Houston, Texas – A person was killed in an automobile wreck by a suspected drunk driver in Houston, Harris County, Texas.

Fox26 reports the suspected intoxicated driver was traveling on Highway 6 at a high rate of speed and collided with an unidentified motorist that was exiting a gas station. The driver showed signs of intoxication and was detained. Chief of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division, Sean Teare, stated his office has accepted a charge of intoxication manslaughter.

The fatal accident occurred at 1 a.m. near the intersection at Westpark and S. Highway 6.

The investigation into this fatal crash remains ongoing.

When Are There More Drunk Drivers On The Road?

Despite laws and public campaigns about the dangers of drinking and driving, people still drive drunk. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 28 people die in drunk driving auto accidents every day, which equates to one person dying every 52 minutes.

Fatal crashes involving intoxicated drivers can occur at any time of the day.  However, the odds of being involved in an alcohol-related crash increases at certain times of the day and throughout the week:

  • 55% of alcohol-related crashes occur between midnight and 3 a.m.
  • 35% of alcohol-related crashes occur between 9 p.m. and midnight.
  • 15% of drivers involved in alcohol-related crashes occur during the week.
  • 30% of drivers involved in alcohol-related crashes occur during the weekends.

Who Can Be Held Liable For A Drunk Driving Accident?

It’s well-known that intoxicated drivers are more likely to be involved in a car accident. Reaction time is slow and their ability to focus is diminished. If an intoxicated driver causes an accident resulting in injuries or death, they can be sued and held accountable for their actions. In Texas, the person or business that provided the alcohol to the intoxicated driver can also be sued. A thorough investigation is needed to identify the events and those involved that led to the driver’s intoxication.
