Hazards Of Street Parking

Abandoned and parked vehicles on the side of the road or in the roadway can present unnecessary hazards for other motorists. Motorists don’t generally anticipate a vehicle will be parked near a roadway. In fact, the general expectation is the roadway will be clear of potential obstructions and provide a clear travel lane and/or shoulder allowing other motorists to make evasive maneuvers, if necessary.

Parking on the shoulder or near a roadway is extremely dangerous, not only for the car owner but other motorists. If stopping on or near a roadway, do the following:

  • Pull over to the right side of the roadway, as the right lane is generally the “slow lane”
  • Stop your vehicle as far away from the roadway as possible. If able, pull the vehicle completely off the shoulder.
  • Activate emergency hazard lights on your vehicle to alert other motorists
